What can we learn from the visual arts, from music and drama in our creative writing practice?

We have two upcoming workshops that borrow from different art forms, run by award winning Susanna Crossman - interviewed here by Lily Dunn

One of the things I love about running London Lit Lab is the amazing writers who host courses for us. Susanna Crossman is an award-winning writer, and I was very lucky to be an early reader on her excellent and moving memoir, Home is Where We Start, which was published last year by Fig Tree, Penguin. Her new novel, ‘The Orange Notebooks’, will be published by Bluemoose Books in 2025. Susanna and I know each other because we both write for Aeon, and there are crossovers in our childhood experience, as Susanna grew up in a Marxist community (while my dad lived in a commune, of a very different nature, under the guru of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, otherwise known as Osho). Susanna regularly collaborates with artists and film-makers, and works internationally as a lecturer and clinical arts-therapist.

Susanna is running two workshops for us - one at the end of this month and one at the end of June. The first is ‘Writing Using Visual, Musical and Drama Technique’ (26th April – 2-4pm); the second is ‘Developing a Creative Thinking Writing Practice’ – (21st June – 2-4pm). The first workshop is £20 and the second one is £40. You can book either one (or both!) by clicking on the links above.

Susanna has a really original approach to writing and teaching, and you will leave these courses with an expanded toolkit of techniques that will help in your writing practice. We hope you enjoy the video as an introduction and feel inspired to join us.

The Writing Laboratory is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
