Our next online short story club discussion will be 6-7pm on 26th November, via Zoom.

We’ll be reading ‘Stone Mattress’ by Margaret Atwood, published in both the New Yorker and her collection of the same name, a tale of revenge served very cold indeed. This is a fairly long short story, but so beautifully constructed and satisfying (or is it?), it is worth taking the time to read it. Atwood seems to be a writer with a strong interest in revenge (see also her novels Cat’s Eye and Hagseed, and many others once you start to look for it), and this story is a crystalline example of that theme and the way its sharp edges gouge the human soul.

Our monthly short story club meetings, memoir club and accountability club are all available to paid subscribers!
